I’m going to sit down and create a new draft of the script - my current print is so overwhelmed with sticky notes and scribbles in the margins that it’s just not efficient to work off of. It should take me a day or two to make sense of everything we’ve written in the last four months and work it into the script - and from there I’ll feel more confident about my editing decisions.
I had been stretching myself between work and Bright White Hearts this last month, but I’m moving onto a more consistent schedule with FToM and it feels great - well, my laptop is giving me grief about editing, but otherwise! Erica and I are actually both upgrading our machines soon, and it will be a much needed upgrade with the timeline pushing 2 hours; last time I checked, it took around 15 minutes for Final Cut to open the film’s timeline.
Also, I’m having issues with render files disconnecting on me and then refusing to reconnect, even manually, so I’m left with 40% of the film being unwatchable on a regular basis. But!, enough complaining, these are just small annoyances and nothing that keep me from moving forward on the film. Crossed a few more to-do’s off the list and wanted to post an update saying so.
Add in reverse of NY welcome sign.- Clean up scene w/ Larry walking in the field w/ frogs.
- Find VHS birthday footage for Forest “same measured…”.
Try to work in HFs20 rig footage from hiking to replace mp4.- Larry saying “Today I started…” is out of order.
Move 37:41 shot of house somewhere.Either move waterfall at 41:28 to Rainy Pass or Glacier.- Spread out Five Years *a lot* - make it work!
Go get ECU for 1:28:12.Fargo fireworks footage to go before 36th day.Slow down VO for “the sun…”.- Find a stationary shot to help bridge the Sun and Larry.
Need to sit down and work out a better remaining to-do list for myself - I have been doing a bit of homework on sound for the film, specifically sound related to the wildlife that is heard from one state to the next. I’m not quite sure how to approach that part of post, it’s a lot of research and tracking down bird songs and I don’t know where to start or when to start. More on that later - that’s another post for another time.

As of last week, all the editing notes and all the script changes are entered into a new draft of the FToM script. I’ve already put in two late nights of editing, although, I would have liked to spent more than just two nights editing, but I had to set aside two days to move everything off my machine safely and then reinstall the OSX to try to get past some bugs I’ve been dealing with. Unfortunately, all the bugs are not gone, but my computer is moving along like a brand new MacBook Pro, so, not a total waste of time.
In any case, here is an updated list of to-dos that I’ve been working on. I went ahead and crossed off the things I’ve already been able to solve, the rest I’m still dealing with.
Ocean noises at 4:50 w/ time lapse. Possibly split the 4:50 sunset shot / time lapse to re-frame with ocean and the sunset. Two empty houses should be moved.- Add in reverse of NY welcome sign.
Fix sweeping shot at 17:05.- Clean up scene w/ Larry walking in the field w/ frogs.
- Find VHS birthday footage for Forest “same measured…”.
- Try to work in HFs20 rig footage from hiking to replace mp4.
- Larry saying “Today I started…” is out of order.
- Move 37:41 shot of house somewhere.
Move trees at 38:15 - show POV instead. Would the trees from 38:15 work during coming home?- Add more ECU of details between 40:39 - or visa versa, with Larry watching.
- Either move waterfall at 41:28 to Rainy Pass or Glacier.
- Spread out Five Years *a lot* - make it work!
- Go get ECU for 1:28:12.
- Fargo fireworks footage to go before 36th day.
- Slow down VO for “the sun…”.

I’ll keep this post short, as I would like for these updates between Hedge and I to be manageable and something I can stay on-top of between editing. Amanda and I are meeting on the 28th to re-watch the current edit of FToM and take more notes, I’ll share what I can from those after I get everything down on paper.
Yesterday’s meeting with Amanda went great - it took three hours longer than planned to get through the entire film, she arrived here at the apartment at 11:30 in the morning and six hours later we finally finished watching the current cut of FToM. I’m left with pages of notes and a lot of new ideas on how to clean up areas that were still a mess and, more importantly, how to bring emotional to areas of the film that are meant to give the audience chills and are not yet doing so.

At one point during our meeting - Amanda jumped up and clapped and she looked misty eyed, it felt good for me to know that something I had been working on was finally coming together; I still remember the first time I showed her my rough edit of 64 Days, Part 1, and she had a simliar reaction… I felt like we were about to really share something unique with people… and yesterday I got that feeling again.

I’ve been spending a few hours a day going over FToM in Final Cut this last week - I thought it would be a good time to re-check in with this list posted back in March and cross off what’s been taken care of and write about what’s still in need of attention.
- Timecode overlay.
Make opening clips more chronological.- extra footage to juxtapose during coming-home.
- Stevens route map. Steamer footage.
Lose “nearby Reno”.Where’s the knee rubbing shot?More shots of the older guys.- Bluebird shot needs to move. Different segment.
- Closeups, POV, near “bullet holes”.
Move sunset shot to “1st time unchanging”.- Add more rain shots before that.
Add “in him” near misguided.Take Devil’s Lake shot and move after 5 Years.- Lots of ECU at “in his surroundings”.
Notes on what is not crossed through above: 1st, the timecode overlay hasn’t been applied past the first 15 minutes because of rendering constraints. 2nd, still looking for a better mix of footage to work with Larry’s coming home scenes; needing to talk to Amanda again about what we have and what’s been used already. 3rd, I’m leaning towards archival Steamer footage more-so than a United States map, so, I’ll have to re-look for something that could work for the 1880s. 4th, I believe I know where this would be a better fit, but I have yet to make room for it in the timeline. 5th, found my “bullet holes” shot last night, hoping it fits look-wise. 6th, needing to dig through personal footage to match with early rain storm near Montana. 7th, I’ve only placed in one shot here that works well at this point, currently collecting other shots to build out a bridge between the intro and outro shot.
Hedge and I are hoping to post these kinds of overall project updates each third week of the month - I liked the idea of sharing my monthly goals, even if they are vaguely worded, and letting people hold me to those goals.

In response to a discussion Hedge and I were having - I wanted to post the last batch of notes that Amanda took when we sat down and watched the most recent draft of FToM. Now, I realize these notes, which are short and make references to specific shots or sections of narration, won’t be clear to most people reading - but I still wanted to share them in that they each need to be addressed by this time next month:
- Timecode overlay.
- Make opening clips more chronological.
- extra footage to juxtapose during coming-home.
- Stevens route map. Steamer footage.
- Lose “nearby Reno”.

I can’t go into details as to what each point means, but I will be able to update on if that task has been crossed off.
